#496 EXPLORER
Playbook #496 · The Honest Heist

The Write-Off Vaultevery legal deduction your business keeps leaving locked

The honest antidote to “write off your G-Wagon” reels. No fraud, no gimmicks — just the real, IRS-grounded deductions a U.S. small business or self-employed person misses every single year. Built to stay true for 5–10 years.

You’re not robbing the vault. The law already says the money is yours.
Tax education, not tax advice. This Vault teaches the rules so you can ask better questions. For your specific numbers, run heavy scenarios past a licensed CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA).
The Combination Room

Four calculators. Real math.

These are the actual decisions that move money on a Schedule C. Punch in your numbers — the Vault shows you which method wins and what it’s worth. Nothing leaves your phone.

Home Office
Mileage vs Actual
Section 179
QBI (§199A)

Home-Office Deduction

Simplified method ($5 / sq ft, capped at 300 sq ft) vs. the regular method (business-use % of your real home costs). The Vault runs both and tells you the winner.

Authority: IRC §280A(c) · Rev. Proc. 2013-13 (simplified) · Form 8829. Simplified cap = 300 sq ft × $5 = $1,500.

Mileage: Standard vs Actual

The standard rate is easy; actual expenses sometimes win big. In 2026 the rate changed mid-year — 72.5¢ (Jan–Jun), 76¢ (Jul–Dec) — so the Vault splits your log for you.

Authority: IRC §162 · Pub 463 · Notice 2026-10 & Announcement 2026-11 (mid-year rate change). Pick one method in year 1 of a car’s use; rules limit switching later.

Section 179 + Bonus Depreciation

Buy qualifying equipment and deduct it now instead of over years. Under the 2025 law, §179 caps at $2.5M and 100% bonus depreciation is back and permanent.

Authority: IRC §179 · §168(k) · OBBBA (2025). Deduction can’t create/increase a business loss under §179 (bonus depreciation can). SUVs 6,000–14,000 lb GVWR face a separate §179 cap.

QBI Deduction (§199A) Estimator

Pass-through owners can deduct up to 20% of qualified business income. Made permanent in 2025. Below the income threshold it’s simple; above it, wage/property limits kick in.

Authority: IRC §199A · OBBBA §70105 · Rev. Proc. 2025-32. Rate stayed 20% (a proposed 23% was dropped). 2026 adds a $400 minimum for ≥$1,000 active QBI. Above thresholds & for SSTBs, extra limits apply — see a pro.

The Traps

The reels are lying to you

Each “trap” below starts with a consequence, kills the myth, and — in the book — ends with why these reels exist (spoiler: to sell you a course). Here’s a taste.

The full appendix dismantles 20+ viral write-off myths, each with the penalty statute (§6662 accuracy, §6663 fraud) and, where they exist, the Tax Court cases the creators hope you never read.
